READING Program Overview
Beginning Readers
Reading begins with Phonemic Awareness: Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate individual phonemes; also known as the smallest sound a letter makes. By focusing on letter shapes and sounds new readers are able to transition through the reading stages easily and confidently. Our multisensory approach to teaching early reading skills makes learning to read fun and easy.
Emerging Readers
Once Phonemic awareness has been mastered the next step is mastering decoding/phonics skills as well as learning pertinent sight words. Our comprehensive approach to teaching phonics focuses on visual, auditory, and kinesthetic activities that help your student master phonetic skills quickly. Students practice reading aloud during every lesson. As their reading skills improve, their confidence improves.
Reading Comprehension Program
If your child is an emerging reader or has already mastered the act of reading, it is now time to focus on Reading Comprehension. Some students read fast but do not comprehend what they just read; therefore, both understanding and retention suffer.
The ability to comprehend what has just been read is the #1 most important skill a student can master because it increases performance in every other academic subject on a permanent basis.
Our Reading Comprehension program helps students master the six core comprehension skills: Understanding the Main Idea, Recalling Facts, Vocabulary in Context, Identifying Inferences, Sequencing, and Drawing Conclusions. Once these skills are mastered, your child is ready to work independently and with confidence to reach his/her fullest potential.
WRITING Program Overview
Writing is a cornerstone academic skill that students need to have in place for success in both school and life. At Silver Oak Learning Center we take a whole-student approach to improving writing skills. We assess your student on his or her writing skills and then design a customized program to help your student reach their fullest potential.
The content of our individualized program includes:
- The Writing Process
- The Forms of Writing: Descriptive, Narrative, Expository, Persuasive, Response to Literature, Creative, and Research Writing
- Grammar Usage and Mechanics
- The basic Elements of Writing
We modify and adapt our students’ programs as we learn more about their strengths and gaps through their writing samples. Our student-to-teacher ratio maximum is 3:1 and all students receive feedback on an individualized basis. Students learn the skills they need to become effective writers while building confidence in skills they will use for the rest of their lives.
